Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) was a British chemical company. I worked for ICI Chemicals and Polymers at the Billingham site as part of my third year work experience during my degree.

My principal role was as a member of the software production team designing and implementing a Laboratory Information System (The purpose being the storage of experimental methodologies and results to allow future reference/interpretation). The project that I worked on was to enhance the features offered by the methods database. This involved:
- Producing a detailed and unambiguous requirements specification from meetings with the client.
- Producing a detailed design using the Yourdon methodology and DECDesign Case tool running under VMS on a VAX network.
- Implementing the new features using VAX FORTRAN and the VAXSET development tools
